Ex-minister criticises sports sex law delay

The law currently covers teachers, hospital workers and carers, but not sports coaches. ‘No brainer’ Ms Crouch – a Conservative MP who resigned as sports minister in November 2018 – told BBC Two’s Victoria Derbyshire programme that if the law was not brought in soon she would look to change the legislation herself, perhaps through a backbench private members’ bill. She described the law as a “no-brainer”. “It is about protecting vulnerable people from an abuse of power,” she said. “Frustratingly it seems to have got bogged down in bureaucracy at the Ministry of Justice, the department that owns the legislation.” The chief executive of the children’s charity NSPCC, Peter Wanless, said it was “absolutely outrageous” the law had not …

6 things we learned at the Baftas

Image copyright Getty Images Hosting the Baftas is a tall order. You have to be likeable, entertaining and funny, under the gaze of the brightest stars in Hollywood. Returning to hosting duties for a second year, Joanna Lumley gave it her best shot, but not everyone was impressed. “I adore Joanna Lumley but who on earth is responsible for her dire script?” asked Denise Welch, while Piers Morgan described her performance as “a train wreck”. A little harsh, perhaps, but some of her lines did fall a little flat. Here are some of the jokes we most enjoyed: “The fabulous Glenn Close is here. The Wife was a wonderful film, although I imagine a lot of men have already moved …

Ester Ledecka: The snowboarder who stunned the ski world

(CNN)Life as a double Olympic champion comes with its perks. If her victory in the super-G alpine skiing event was somewhat unexpected — she was ranked 49th in the world prior to the Games, the reaction to her unprecedented achievement came as an even greater shock to the Czech star.

Emiliano Sala: UK air investigators recover a body from plane wreckage

(CNN)A body was recovered from the wreckage of a plane found in the English Channel during the search for Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala and the plane’s pilot, authorities said Wednesday. Sala, 28, and the 59-year-old Ibbotson were flying in the single-turbine aircraft from Nantes, in northern France, to Cardiff in Wales, when it disappeared from radar near the Channel Islands on January 21. The Argentine striker had recently signed with English Premier League club Cardiff City for a reported £15 million ($19.3 million) from French club Nantes and was heading to the Welsh capital after saying farewell to his former teammates in France. Wreckage from the plane thought to be carrying the footballer was found Sunday by a privately …

Aksel Lund Svindal: 0.02 seconds from glory — Norwegian second in his final downhill race

Are, Sweden (CNN)In the final race of his career, Aksel Lund Svindal made sure his last downhill was a knee-knocking thriller. There was a moment during his run, with the snow falling and fog reducing visibility, that Svindal nipped ahead of race leader Jansrud and looked on course for a third world downhill title, but a wobble in the middle section set him back and the 36-year-old had to settle for silver, just as Jansrud did when Svindal took Olympic gold last year. NFL Hall of Fame lineman wanted son, now entering 5th Super Bowl, to avoid football altogether

CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SUPER BOWL LIII COVERAGE “I discouraged them to play football. I didn’t think (Matthew) would be big enough to play football,” Slater said. “I coached in basketball, soccer, track and field, even some flag football. I didn’t see football as something that he would excel. But when he played flag, he had good speed and he caught the ball and ran well.” Matthew Slater gave other reasons why his former Los Angeles Rams lineman father wanted him to avoid the sport altogether. “He felt that way for two reasons,” he said. “First, he didn’t want me to feel the pressure of living up to his name. He thought the expectations could be unfair. “He also wanted me …

The Patriots head to the Super Bowl — As a fan, all I can say is they hate us ’cause they ain’t us

Fans cheer and hold a sign referring to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola) The five (soon to be six) Super Bowl victories are amazing enough. But here’s a record that will never be broken (until next season, by the Pats themselves): eight straight conference championship games. That’s a demonstration of consistency unparalleled in any sport, let alone one with a salary cap and an overwhelming desire for parity (which is really just another word for mediocrity). Oh, the haters love to talk about the weakness of the AFC East. You can’t blame us if the other three teams have second-rate organizations and third-rate cultures. Not our fault. And where exactly in the NFL do you find a division with four …

Federal preliminary report on limo crash offers no cause yet

State police and prosecutors pursuing a criminal case against the vehicle’s operator had prevented the NTSB from doing its customary inspection protocol on the vehicle until a local judge intervened two weeks ago. NTSB lawyers had said that federal inspectors were prevented from getting within 15 feet (4.5 meters) of the wreckage. Schoharie County District Attorney Susan Mallery argued that criminal cases take precedence. A deal brokered by Judge George Bartlett on Jan. 29 gave NTSB access, with some limitations. The limo blew through a stop sign at a T-intersection and crossed a state route into a parking lot where it struck a sport utility vehicle. The SUV struck and killed two pedestrians and the limousine crashed into an earthen …
