Diane Aulgerwas put in an unthinkable situation. She was pregnant with a baby girl, while her husband, Mark Aulger was dying. Mark became bedridden during her pregnancy.
In 2012, after overcoming stage 3 colon cancer, he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a scarring of the lungs that stops the flow of oxygen to the brain and other vital organs.
She expected that by the time she gave birth to her beautiful baby girl Savannah, Mark would be gone. She thought she’d be welcoming one new life while mourning the loss of another.
The mother decided to make a difficult choice. One that would allowMark tobe able to see his baby girl. Diane’s decision was controversial to some, but it’s clear that she has absolutely no regrets.
Diane decided to induce the labor of her pregnancy early, instead of having the natural births he had planned. She had already began to experience pre-labor symptoms, but going forward this way allowed Mark a chance to hold his baby girl, Savannah.
“Our beds were side by side,” Diane said of when she gave birth.
Mark was able to hold his daughter for 45 minutes. Although he was so ill he could only hold her for a few minutes at a time after that. Two days later, he passed away.
“We know dad is here with us. They talk to dad. Mark was a very funny, funny dad,” she said of her and her children.
